You are pregnant, and as the months go by your body changes and your belly becomes rounder. If at the beginning of your pregnancy you can continue to wear your usual outfits, you will then have to choose maternity clothes specially designed to adapt to your new shape. If you're not sure what size to choose for your maternity clothes, follow the guide!
When should I start wearing maternity clothes?
Every pregnancy is different, which is why it is difficult to give a precise answer to this question. Some women will start wearing clothes as early as the third month, while for others it will not be useful before the sixth month.
The easiest way is to trust your feelings: when you start to feel cramped in your clothes, when your jeans are tight when you sit down, when your dress becomes too short because of your belly, this is the right time to decide to wear maternity clothes that will make you more comfortable.
Note that for a first pregnancy, your belly may take several months to round out, which will allow you to wear your classic clothes a little longer.
Select your usual clothing size
Choosing the right size of maternity clothes is quite simple: generally speaking, you should take the same size as for your regular clothes. The cuts and materials are designed to accompany you throughout your pregnancy and adapt to your changing body shape month after month. The clothes leave enough room for the growing belly and the cuts are looser around the hips and chest.
If you gain more than 10 kg, it may be a good idea to choose a size larger than your usual size. This will allow you to feel good even during the last weeks of pregnancy.
Extra tips
-
For some very close-fitting pieces such as leggings, you can go up a size if you like to be comfortable.
-
Pregancy jeans can be changed thanks to an adjustable waist system, so you can choose your usual size. For more comfort, choose styles with stretch or elastane and a high elasticated band that wraps around the tummy.
-
If you buy tops made of materials with little stretch, such as pure cotton, polyester or linen, choose a size up as well.
-
As far as bras are concerned, you will not be able to wear the ones you have in your wardrobe. Your breasts will grow throughout the 9 months, especially during the 1st and 3rd trimester. It is therefore important to buy maternity bras that are suitable for your new breasts and have good support, which will also be very useful if you are breastfeeding.
Measure yourself before choosing your maternity clothes
If you're not sure which size to choose, measure your bust, bust and hips. You can then refer to the size guide to find the right size for you.
As a reminder:
-
Chest: measure at the strongest point of the chest and if possible with a bra.
-
Bust size: place the tape measure just under the breasts and measure all around.
-
Hip circumference: this should be measured at the widest point of the hips.
If you are between sizes after taking your measurements, we advise you to choose the size you were used to before becoming pregnant.
