What to wear for your baby's arrival
During your stay in hospital, your baby needs to be comfortable. You will need to choose clothes that are comfortable and easy to put on. The wrap-around shape with a press stud fastening is perfect for limiting the amount of handling that could inconvenience your child. You should also know that, contrary to what you might think, a newborn baby gets dirty easily. Even if you are only staying in the maternity ward for a few days, bring half a dozen bodysuits and as many pyjamas. It is important that the extremities are kept warm with socks and a hat. A special bonnet, made of fine cotton knitwear, is ideal. You can buy a more elegant outfit for the outing, but always opt for natural, soft and comfortable materials.
Socks can also be used to keep a slightly large pyjama in place by putting them on over it. Even though it is tempting to put together a baby's trousseau with a lot of clothes in birth size, you should keep in mind that your baby will grow very quickly.
In the maternity ward, your baby will sleep most of the time. To make it easier for him to sleep, bring one or two sleeping bags. This avoids the need for blankets and ensures that your baby will always be warm, even if he or she moves around. Also consider a few bras or waistcoats with an easy opening. Finally, so that he doesn't catch a cold after his bath, offer him a bath cape, which allows him to dry and warm up, while cuddling him.
Childcare accessories for your baby's trousseau
To prepare for the birth, you will also need to equip yourself with childcare equipment, particularly for washing and feeding. Of course, bibs are an essential part of your baby's birth accessories. Don't be afraid to have too many, they are always useful. Cotton nappies are also very versatile for protecting and washing up.
For meals, plan for half a dozen bottles with a large enough capacity. You can sterilise them once for the whole day, in an electric steriliser, in the microwave or with cold sterilisation tablets. Don't forget the bottle brush to ensure that your bottles are perfectly clean. If you are breastfeeding, consider buying special bras, breast shells and breast pads.
In addition to a suitable bathtub and a bath thermometer, you should also have prepared a changing table with a mattress well before the birth. Some bathtubs can be stowed away under the changing table, which saves valuable space. Baby care products should be particularly gentle, as your baby's skin is still very fragile: special shampoo, soap-free cleansing gel, diaper cream, soft bristle hairbrush, etc.
