Thinking about your birth list
Preparing for the arrival of a baby is a magical moment that requires the parents' full attention. To help you in your preparations, the birth list is a precious tool. It will allow you to take stock of what you need and will give gift ideas to your friends and family who want to spoil your future little treasure. Discover our advice on how to think about your birth list and make it a success.
Make your birth list early enough
By starting your birth list early enough, you can use it as a "reminder" to list everything you need to prepare for the birth of your baby. You can then refine it to leave only the items you want to offer to your loved ones. It is generally advisable to start it around the 5th month of pregnancy, particularly because the sex of the baby is generally known, but also because you will have other things to think about as the pregnancy progresses! You can then distribute it around the 7th month of pregnancy, in order to give your loved ones time.
Choose between an in-store or online birth list
It is possible to create a birth list in a shop or directly online. There are advantages in both cases :
- In a nursery shop: you can see the items before adding them to the birth list and you also benefit from the advice and expertise of the sales advisors.
- On the internet: practical and fast, you don't even need to leave your armchair to create your birth list. In just a few clicks you can create the list you want.
At Natalys, we offer you the possibility to open your birth list in one of our shops or directly on our website.
List your wishes by category
Thinking about your birth list requires a little organisation! Between childcare equipment, toys, clothes and even decoration, the list of items to welcome your baby is rather long. To help you find your way around and make it easier for your family and friends to use the birth list, we advise you to organise it by category:
- Sleep : bed, cradle, etc.
- Meals : bottle, bib, highchair, etc.
- Early learning : early learning games, early learning mats, etc.
- Mobility : strollers, baby carrier, changing bag, etc.
- For the bedroom: wardrobe, chest of drawers...
- Baby's dressing room: pyjamas, accessories, bodysuit...
Think of gifts for all budgets
Keep in mind that not all your loved ones have the same financial capacity. So, so that everyone can take part in the birth list according to their means, think about mixing low-cost items (bib, bottle, cuddly toy, early-learning games, etc.) with more expensive equipment (pushchair, bed, highchair, etc.). It is also possible for several people to participate in the purchase of a rather expensive gift: each person deposits the amount they wish and when the amount is reached, the gift is offered.
Share your birth list
Once you have finalised your birth list, you should share it with the people around you. Young parents are sometimes embarrassed, but remember that everyone is free to participate or not and that, in most cases, your friends and family will ask you if a list has been created. You can share your birth list with your closest friends and family first, and then with others if they ask you what you would like to receive as a gift for your baby's birth.
Don't impose anything on your family
Ideally, you'd like your friends and family to get all their gifts from your birth list. But don't forget that it is there, above all, to inspire them and guide them in their choice. The birth list is never a compulsory thing. If your friends or family want to give you a more personal gift that isn't on the list, that's fine too. It's the thought that counts!
