What size garment should I choose for my baby?

What size garment should I choose for my baby?

Baby's arrival is just around the corner, so it's time to start filling her dresser with a few small items of clothing. However, it's not always easy to know what size to choose to fit. Find out some tips and tricks to avoid pitfalls and choose the right size of clothes for a baby.

Don't look at the age of the baby, look at the size

When you look at the label of a baby's clothes, it says an age on it: 1 month, 3 months, 6 months... Yes, but not all babies will be the same weight and size at similar ages! This is why you should not rely on age but on your baby's stature to choose the right size of clothes.

For example:

  • a baby of 54 cm and 3.5 kg at birth will take 1 month;

  • a baby of 48 cm and 2.5 kg at birth will wear a birth size;

  • a baby of 56 cm and 4 kg at birth will be able to wear a 3 month size.

For a better understanding, we invite you to consult the baby and child size guide proposed by Natalys. It will help you decide which size of clothing to choose according to your baby's height and weight.

Note that the sizes indicated in cm in the table correspond to the maximum size up to which your baby can wear this garment. If your child is 71 cm tall, you should choose a 12 month size that goes up to 74 cm and not a 9 month size that ends at 71 cm. If your child is between two sizes, always choose the larger size so that he or she is as comfortable as possible, even if it means rolling up the sleeves or the bottom of the trousers a little.

Don't buy clothes too long before the birth

Even if you can't wait to buy him his first little clothes, don't rush! It's best to wait for the 3rd trimester ultrasound, which allows you to estimate the weight and size of your future baby with greater precision.

If you still want to buy in advance or if the information is not very precise, go for the 1 month, which generally corresponds to the average measurements of a baby.

An infant grows very quickly and changes size rapidly. We therefore advise you not to buy too many clothes at once, at the risk of ending up with pieces that you will never be able to put on him. Build up his wardrobe as he needs it, taking into account his growth.

Take the seasons into account when choosing clothing sizes

Another point not to be neglected is to take the seasons into account.

A baby who is going to be born in the middle of summer will not logically need wool jumpers or a big warm coat in size 1 month. On the other hand, you can buy him some in size 6 months, or even 9 months if he is very big, to wear next winter. And in the meantime, go for summer outfits in 1 and 3 months.

And for a birth gift: what size clothes should you choose?

If you want to give a garment as a birth gift, forget about small sizes such as birth, 1 month and even 3 months, because young parents already own a lot of them. Instead, choose a size 6 or 12 months so that baby gets the most out of his or her garment, as children grow very fast in the first few months. Also consider the seasonality before making your choice.

Natalys chose to make this garment out of pima cotton instead of a standard cotton because it has the characteristic of being hypoallergenic and more absorbent. Pima cotton has longer fibres which make it more resistant and capable of retaining its shape. Its smoothness and suppleness are ideal for babies’ skin.
